In Stitches

I have been occupied with other things than this blog lately. However, I would like to share a poem with you that I wrote a few years ago. It is about the beautiful Lake Macquarie where I live, and how I saw it one day as I walked along the shore.

The poem was recently commended in the Morisset Show Poetry Competition.

Wangi Bay stretches before me,

a coarse wind-ruffled

grey-green fabric;

patches of dirty brown

rain-stirred run-off

tacked onto it here and there

like jungle-camouflage.

Silver sequins

tossed onto the watery quilt

tumble and sparkle among

the grey jetty stripes and squares

and the multi-coloured

ship-shaped pieces

that have been tacked on

with contrasting whitecap stitches.

Here and there,

in out-of-the-way places

an occasional dot

of white embroidery –

a bobbing seagull or pelican.

A narrow, irregular strip

of breaking waves

marks the inner border

separating the nautical pattern

from its dark green edging

of eucalypt and casuarina

and spiky Lomandra longifolia

Today, the lake is a patch-work quilt

that I would like to take home with me.

  1. Beautiful piece

  2. Lovely poetry.

  3. That’s beautiful, Linda. I love the metaphor of the quilt, so original and your descriptions are exquisite. I can understand why it was recognized. 🙂

  4. A lovely poem, Linda.

  5. Wow, what a way to describe the lake and its shore! Absolutely beautiful!
I’m visiting from the a to z challenge and looking forward to more 💚

  6. It says it all, Linda. The picture’s in my mind – you love the water, don’t you? So do I.

    • I sure do love the water, Frederick. When I moved inland at age 20 when I married & started teaching, it took some time for me to get used to the open plains of Central West NSW. It is lovely to be near the lake and the ocean again. 🙂

  7. A charming poem, Linda 🙂

  8. Lovely writing Linda. So glad you are nearly finished your manuscript! We’ll have to catch up again

    • Thanks Debbie. 🙂 Yes, we’ll have to catch up – it’s been a while! Might have to wait until late April though – family commitments until then. 🙂

  10. Hi Linda, great blog and thanks for joining AZ! Could you add the 2016 challenge badge to the sidebar?

    Damyanti, AZ cohost 2016

    • Hi Damyanti & thanks for dropping in.
Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the A to Z this year due to family commitments that involve travel & lack of time for other things. That’s why I haven’t posted the A-Z badge.
The same reason is why I couldn’t get my blog posts ready ahead of time.
I do hope I can get back into the A-Z next year.
Hope it all goes well! 🙂

  11. Linda come back to blogging. We miss you here.
