I intended to do a whole series on Australian animals for the A to Z Blogging Challenge this year. However, life and depression got in the way of getting my research done, and I can’t do each one as they come up because of other commitments. So I decided not to participate at all. I was very disappointed, as I found it fun to join in last year.
Then I had a brainwave. Over the last nine years since I began my creative writing, I have had a go at writing poetry. I have written quite a few poems and, although they are not prize-winning material, some of them aren’t too bad. They also cover a wide range of subjects and styles. I decided to use some of them and go by the titles for the alphabetical order, with just few of them going by the type of poem (as in haiku, quinzaine and senryu).
Here is the first of them – “A is for Answer”.
The Answer Is Blowing In The Wind
What would you like for Christmas?
Book, watch or a diamond ring?
What about for your birthday?
Well now, I have just the thing!
Not only will it give you a blast,
it’ll save the planet too.
I know this all sounds amazing,
but you can believe that it’s true.
You see, ev’ry single one of us,
and the pets that we take to our heart,
Well, we all – to put it bluntly –
Break wind – oh blow it – we fart!
Now this flatulence contains methane,
A greenhouse gas through and through,
which all contributes to climate change;
so what on earth can we do?
Well, someone’s discovered the answer –
they must have wonderful dreams –
we can all buy carbon credits
in emissions trading schemes!
You can buy your dad or your partner
the carbon credits they need
to offset their nether emissions;
thus, from their guilt they’ll be freed.
It seems a wonderful system –
for those who have money to buy.
Your farts – and your cat’s – will be covered;
they won’t go up to the sky.
So, don’t worry about wasted power;
drive off in your huge S.U.V.
My gift to you lets you off the hook –
you can now let your wind blow free!
I wrote this after reading an article, “Green answer is blowing in the wind” in the “Weekend Australian” newspaper: It told of people buying carbon credits as gifts for their loved ones to cover their own emissions or those of their pets.
