I am sitting in the waiting room of my local G.P.

Cheap white plastic garden chairs, worn tile floor

Health posters on every available wall or counter space

From baby immunisation to osteoporosis awareness

From anti-smoking to cold and flu sense.

Music in the background from the 50s to the 70s and

Magazines on the small reading table

– Women’s Weekly and Unique cars –

Reflect the demographic of the predominant clientele.

Friendly receptionist chats with each incoming patient

Most of whom smile at each other in friendly acknowledgement.

I think of those who must attend a large clinic

Not knowing which duty-physician’s three-minute

Production line they will end up in.

Here, at least, patient anxiety is moderated by

the G.P’s knowledge of each individual’s ailments and

this personal service provides each patient with security and continuity.

I know where I prefer to go.
